Storage and Backup Administrator Job description
Key Responsibilities:
Storage Management:
- Design, implement, and maintain the organization’s Storage Area Networks (SAN), Network-Attached Storage (NAS) systems.
- Monitor and manage storage performance, capacity, and utilization, ensuring efficient and optimal use of resources.
- Manage storage provisioning, including creating, allocating, and maintaining logical volumes, storage pools, and file systems.
- Perform storage performance tuning, capacity planning, and troubleshooting to ensure reliable and high-performing storage environments.
- Maintain and monitor data replication, mirroring, and cloning solutions for high availability and disaster recovery purposes.
- Manage storage integration with virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware, etc.) and on-premises environments
Backup Management:
- Design, configure, and maintain backup infrastructure and solutions, ensuring all critical data is backed up in accordance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Develop and manage backup policies and schedules, ensuring timely and reliable backups of all key systems, databases, and files.
- Utilize backup technologies such as Veeam and EMC Networker
- Monitor backup jobs for failures, troubleshoot issues, and ensure successful data recovery when necessary.
- Regularly perform data recovery drills to validate the effectiveness of backup and disaster recovery solutions.
Disaster Recovery & Data Protection:
- Develop and maintain comprehensive disaster recovery (DR) plans for storage and backup systems, ensuring minimal data loss and quick recovery in the event of an outage.
- Work closely with other teams to ensure that disaster recovery plans are regularly tested, validated, and updated based on changes to the environment.
- Implement and manage data retention and archiving policies in accordance with business and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure that all storage and backup systems comply with security protocols, including encryption, access controls, and auditing.
Monitoring & Reporting:
- Monitor storage and backup systems for performance, capacity, and potential issues using management tools and dashboards.
- Generate regular reports on storage usage, backup success rates, data recovery readiness, and performance metrics.
- Proactively identify storage and backup issues and recommend improvements to increase system reliability and efficiency.
Collaboration & Support:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including database administrators, application teams, and IT support, to ensure seamless integration of storage and backup systems with other enterprise infrastructure.
- Provide tier 2/3 support for storage and backup-related incidents, working quickly to resolve issues and restore services.
- Document storage and backup configurations, processes, and troubleshooting procedures for reference and audits.
Qualifications:
Required Skills:
- Experience in designing, implementing, and managing enterprise storage systems, including SAN, NAS and cloud storage solutions.
- Strong understanding of backup technologies e.g., EMC Networker, Veeam, Quantum Tape Library and disaster recovery methodologies.
- Hands-on experience with storage platforms from vendors such as Dell EMC Unity, Dell EMC Data Domain, NetApp, HPE Primera, 3PAR, Oracle ZFS and IBM.
- Proficiency in managing storage in virtualized environments (e.g., VMware vSphere, Aria, VMware Cloud Directory
- Knowledge of data replication, mirroring, and snapshot technologies for business continuity.
- Familiarity with RAID levels, block storage, object storage, and file system concepts.
- Strong troubleshooting skills for both storage and backup systems.
Preferred Skills:
- Knowledge of scripting for automation (PowerShell, Python, Bash).
- Storage-related certifications such as NetApp Certified Data Administrator (NCDA), Dell EMC Proven Professional.
- Familiarity with networking concepts and data center infrastructure.
- ITIL certification for understanding service management best practices.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in information technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
- 10+ years of experience managing enterprise storage and backup solutions.
- Certifications in storage management and backup technologies are a plus.
